Do I need to season a ceramic pan?

Generally, the ceramic pan doesn’t require seasoning. But, some pan comes with the instruction/recommendation to season the ceramic pan before first use. Then, to re-season it every six months to revitalize the nonstick ceramic surface.

Method 1: Season ceramic pan by stove top

Step 1: Pour one teaspoon of vegetable oil into the ceramic pan. Then, use your fingers or a paper towel to spread the oil over the entire ceramic surface. Spread the oil bottom and side of the pan.

Step 2: Place the pan on the stove. Then, turn on the stove to a medium heat temperature. Heat the ceramic pan until it begins to smoke. The heating process may take several minutes. While you heat the pan, you need to keep the temperature medium so that the oil heats slowly.

Step 3: Remove the pan from the stove. Please put it on a plain surface and let it be cool down to the average temperature. Please do not attempt to cool the pan faster by placing it in a refrigerator. Suddenly a temperature change can damage the ceramic surface.

Method 2: Seasoning ceramic non-stick pan by oven

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit (150° Celsius). You can preheat the oven as the low temperature at least 250° Fahrenheit (130° Celsius) or as the temperature is less than 350° Fahrenheit ( 180° Celsius), but do not exceed this range.

Step 2: Pour one tablespoon (15 ml) vegetable oil into the nonstick pan. Spread the oil with your fingers or paper towel. Make sure, spread the oil surface on the pan, bottom, and sides. You can use vegetable oil, vegetable shortening, canola oil, peanut oil, and grape seed oil on this step. Do not use butter or olive oil.

Step 3: Place the ceramic pan in the middle rack of the preheated oven. Leave the pan for at least an hour. If you notice smoke coming from the pan surface before an hour, you can remove the pan early.

Step 4: Remove the pan from the oven and place it on a plain surface out of room temperature. Allow the pan to cool as well. The pan temperature will drop to room temperature. The cooling process may take 15 minutes.

Step 5: Wipe off any excess oil from the ceramic pan with a clean paper towel. Clean the pan twice so that your pan will be shine.

Method 3: Season a ceramic pan by sunlight

Step 1: Pour one to two tablespoons of vegetable oil into the ceramic pan. Spread the oil over the ceramic pan surface, bottom, sides by using your hand or paper towel. Make sure you spread the oil as a light coat over the pan surface. Avoid letting the oil puddle up inside the ceramic pan.

Step 2: Place the pan in a brown paper shopping bag. Open the paper bag and, at first, put the ceramic pan surface inside the bag. The handle can either be outside the bag or hidden inside the bag either option is acceptable. The paper bag will protect the ceramic surface of the pan from direct sunlight. It helps to get natural heat from the sunlight and catch any oil that drips off the pan.

Step 3: Find a sunny place and sit the pan in direct sunlight and for several days. Leave the pan for three to five days in a sunny place. Touch the bag every day and check it is warm or not. If the bag is not warm, the sunlight might not be strong enough at that place.

Step 4: Remove the bag from the sunlight. Open the bag and take out the pan. Clean the pan surface with a paper towel. Wipe any visible oil from the pan.

Re-season the ceramic pan

You will need to re-season the pan every six months. You can use any of these methods to re-season your ceramic nonstick pan. Re-season your ceramic pan whenever food starts sticking to it regularly.
