Fix a cracked coffee mug

You will need

  • Epoxy
  • Hardener
  • Paper plate
  • Popsicle stick
  • Razor blade
  • Toothpick
  • Dry cloth

Step 1: Find out the crack

Check out the crack on a ceramic mug. Don’t budge or separate the crack with your hand. If the crack too small like a scratch or it isn’t loosened, it doesn’t need to be repaired. If you found that the crack is more, loose, little space between the crack, and the edges can be pulled apart even slightly, a repair is necessary.

Step 2: Mix the epoxy solution

Mix a little amount of epoxy ( depends on the crack) with the same amount of hardener. The epoxy is commonly packed with hardener and many types include a dual syringe applicator that distributes an equal amount of both materials. Pour the epoxy and hardener into a paper plate or small piece of cardboard. Then, mix them thoroughly as directed by using a popsicle stick.

Step 3: Push the crack edge

Push the sharp edge with a razor blade into the crack to open it a little wider. Hold the blade tightly by fingers and forth gently rather than pressing it straight down. In this step, you are trying to get an opening for the adhesive to inter in it.

Step 4: Apply epoxy into the crack

Apply epoxy into the crack with a toothpick. In this step, you need to work faster than other steps, because you have three to four minutes of work time before the epoxy starts to cure. Be sure as well, epoxy can dribble out of the crack and harden enough into the place.

Step 5: Warp and wipe the cracked area

Warp with a rubber band around the body of your ceramic mug to hold the edges of the crack together tightly. Clean up excess epoxy from repair areas with a soft dry cloth. Do not push the crack area when you clean it.

Step 6: Allow the epoxy to dry

Place the ceramic mug in a plain surface. After that, allow the coffee mug to sit until the epoxy becomes cure completely. Remove the rubber band and clean the coffee mug and start using it.

Step 1: Gather the pieces of mug

Assemble all the pieces of the broken ceramic coffee mug. Place the prices aside. Do not pick up the sharpen piece with empty hands. Use hand gloves to pick up the broken pieces.

Step 2: Set the broken mug

Put the main body of the ceramic coffee mug into a bucket of sand with the part that needs to be repaired pointed up. This helps secure the ceramic mug and allowing you to work with both hands.

Step 3: Clean out dust from the broken pieces

Brush all debris or dust out of the broken edges with a toothbrush or paintbrush.

Step 4: Make the epoxy solution

Make a solution with a small amount of epoxy and the same amount of hardener. Epoxy usually comes with a hardener. Some of the epoxy and hardener comes with dual syringe applicator that distributes equal amounts of both materials. Dispense the epoxy and hardener on a small paper bowl and mix them thoroughly with a popsicle stick.

Step 5: Apply epoxy mixer on the main broken body

Step 6: Repair the mug

Set the broken piece into the main body of the ceramic mug and hold it at least 30 to 40 seconds. Then, take a piece of masking tape, and put it on both sides of the crack. Do the same job until you finished to put all the pieces. Clean the repair surface of the mug with a soft cloth.

Step 7: Let the epoxy mixer to dry completely

Find out a plain surface and place the mug on it. Let the fixed mug at least 15 minutes to cure epoxy completely. Then, remove the masking tape from the mug and clean it as well. Now, your broken mug is fixed and you can use it as you used before.

If your mug is chipped and you looking for a faster solution to make it smooth, nail polish will help you to fix a chipped mug. To avoid sharp edges of the chipped rim, paint over the damaged area with nail polish. Avoid using normal nail polish because they can sometimes contain formaldehyde. Use non-toxic nail polish.

Fix broken handle by using ceramic epoxy

If your ceramic coffee mugs handle has broken off, repair it by using epoxy glue instead of super glue. Epoxy glue has better structural strength than normal superglue. How To Repair A Cracked or broken Mug With Cyanoacrylate Glue

The cyanoacrylate glue, gorilla glue, aka crazy glue, or super glue is a strong, and quick setting to bond cracked mug together faster with a thin layer of glue. Those glues available in liquid format, and it allows you to soak into cracks, and some adhesive gives it better heat and water resistance.

Before you repair the mug, make sure how will you use it? If you use it for drinking your beverage with it, please chose the non-toxic and food safe glue. So that you will not going to get toxins into your brew. It will be safe for your health.

If you really want to repair it and use it back to your kitchen and look better, so cyanoacrylate glue is a better solution for you. Cyanoacrylate glue works better and fixes the crack faster. But for myself, I prefer not to take the risk of getting toxic materials in contact with my drink or food.

  • Let the glue soak in for 3 to 5 seconds.
  • Quickly wipe off all the excess Cyanoacrylate glue next to the crack before it dries.
  • Leave it at least 5 minutes to cure as well before use it or follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

How To Repair A Cracked or broken Mug With Epoxy

The epoxy is a two-part adhesive which is consisting of a resin and a hardening agent. Once you mixed two-part of adhesive together then they start to cure, and it’s forming as a durable bond with any surfaces they come into contact with. Epoxy lasts long and more heat-resistant and water-resistant than milk or cyanoacrylate glue. Most of the epoxy is available in food-safe versions.The epoxy allows you to fix broken pieces of your mug. It works better than Cyanoacrylate glue or other glue. Especially if you want to repair a broken or bigger crack, the epoxy works better then others to be bond between two surfaces. It is probably not ideal for the hairline cracks.

  • Mix up two-part epoxy as well for several minutes.
  • Apply the mixed epoxy between bigger cracked or broken pieces carefully.
  • Let the epoxy soak in for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Wipe off all the excess applied epoxy next to the crack before it dries.
  • Leave the mug at least 5 minutes to cure as well before use it or follow the manufacturer’s instructions for better results.
